QUOTABLE QUOTES
***Truth and Error
“For here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to
tolerate error so long as reason is free to combat it.” Thomas Jefferson
***Being a Survivor
“I’m a survivor. Being a survivor doesn’t mean that you have to be
ruthless. It means that you have to basically be on your own side and want to
win.” Linda Ronstadt
***Boldness
“He was a bold man that first ate an oyster.” Jonathan Swift
***A Kiss
“A kiss is a lovely trick designed by nature to stop speech when words become
superfluous.” Ingrid Bergman
***Aggression
“When women are depressed, they eat or go shopping. Men invade another
country. It’s a whole different way of thinking.” Elayne Boosler
LINCOLN'S LOG—RESOLVE TO BE HONEST
***In Lincoln’s day, just as today, lawyers handled the cases of clients who
were guilty—because under our adversarial system even a guilty person is
entitled to the best defense possible. But what is unethical is being
dishonest while defending a client.
Lincoln was emphatic on
this point: “Resolve to be honest,” he stated. “If, in your own judgment you
cannot be an honest lawyer, resolve to be honest without being a lawyer.
Choose some other occupation, rather than one in the choosing of which you do,
in advance, consent to be a knave.”
Even before Lincoln became
a lawyer, he had earned the name “Honest Abe.” At frontier sporting events
events often led to disputes and brawls. R. B. Rutledge, the son of the New
Salem tavern keeper, remembered that Lincoln was often chosen to resolve
controversies. Rutledge recalled, “People relied implicitly upon his honesty,
integrity, and impartiality.”

LEADERSHIP LESSONS
How To Tell The Truth
Margaret Truman, daughter of Harry Truman, wrote a book about the
wives of the Presidents that she called
First Ladies. Margaret Truman
considered Lady Bird Johnson, wife of Lyndon Johnson, “the almost
perfect First Lady.” As she put it, Lady Bird transformed the position of
First Lady “from the realm of gifted amateur to the domain of the orderly
professional.”
For press secretary, Lady
Bird Johnson hired Liz Carpenter, a shrewd newspaperwoman who for decades had
covered the Washington beat. Lady Bird asked Liz Carpenter to poll the press
corps and find out how she could best relate to them. Here is the advice Liz
Carpenter came back with: “Be available”
and “Never Lie.
Tell us you can’t tell us, but never lie.”
Forward
Thinking
Jazz legend Ramsey Lewis
told me that he makes it a practice to sit quietly by himself just before he
goes on stage and go through the entire concert in his mind. Lewis visualizes
what will happen with each number that he will play. “After I do that,” he
told me, “I can’t wait to go out and get started.”
(I do forward thinking
before a Lincoln performance or a seminar. Hours or sometimes days before the
event I decide the sequence of the stories, the modules that I will use, etc.
I make notes so that I won’t forget. Then, just before I go on, I do a final
forward-thinking exercise to get my mental attitude just right. It’s a mind
game.)
Some high achievers allot
a specific chunk of time on their to-do lists to think through what they are
planning on doing. This gives them time to decide whether they want to move
in one direction or the other, and whether they are stumbling into a trap.
Forward thinking,
incidentally, is an essential element of wisdom. Wisdom is, after all,
understanding what will happen if you act (or do not act) in a certain way.
