"ALL that is necessary for evil to triumph is
for good men to do nothing."
--Edmund Burke
"HE who receives an idea from me, receives
instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine,
receives light without darkening me."
--Thomas Jefferson
"IT is a melancholy fact that many of the worst
laws put upon the statute-books have been put there with the best of intentions
by thoroughly well-meaning people. Mere desire to do right can no more by itself
make a good statesman than it can make a good general."
--"The Best And The Good" 1900, Theodore Roosevelt
"I do not want the best to be any more the
deadly enemy of the good. We climb through degrees of comparison."
--Archbishop Edward White Benson, quoted by Theodore Roosevelt, 1900
"Of thirty thousand CDs that the industry
released last year in the United States, only four hundred and four sold more
than a hundred thousand copies, while twenty-five thousand releases sold fewer
than a thousand copies apiece. No one seems to be able to predict which those
four hundred and four big sellers will be." --John Seabrook, The New Yorker,
July 7, 2003.

PERSONAL PRODUCTIVITY--LESSONS FOR LEADERS
"Be glad if it's hard."
THIS issue's lesson for leaders comes from one
of my former students at Georgia Tech--Dave M. Williams who now is CEO of the
sports marketing firm Southtrac. Williams, who frequently does presentations for
youth groups, makes this point: "BE GLAD IF IT'S HARD. The road to success will
be less crowded if it is. If it's easy, everybody will be doing it." He quotes
JFK who said: "We choose to go to the moon, not because it is easy, but because
it is hard." Williams told me: "I get a lot more business than I should because
of all the red-tape that I have to deal with. The red tape frightens off most of
my would-be competitors."
RED TAPE overwhelms most people. Red tape means
filling out forms, forms, and then more forms. Red tape means returning and
making innumerable phone calls to make sure the job gets done. Red Tape means
picking up the ball when someone drops it.
Dave Williams is a creative entrepreneur who
has discovered that money can be made solving little and big problems that most
people don't want to deal with.
LINCOLN'S LOG
***"Learn there is no life without death, no
dawn without sun-setting, No victory but to Him who has given all."

BOOK NOTES
--An Amazing Story Of An Almost Forgotten Hero
"JOHN PAUL JONES SAILOR, HERO, FATHER OF THE
AMERICAN NAVY" by Evan
Thomas (Simon & Schuster, 2003)
JOHN Paul Jones was under-appreciated in life
and forgotten in death. After his brilliant victory as captain of the "Bonhomme
Richard" over His Britannic Majesty's ship "Serapis"--one of the America's
precious few sea victories in that war--Jones did not get another ship for eight
long years. By that time the war was over, and he had to get his commission from
another nation.
John Paul Jones--his real name was John
Paul--was passed over again by men who were incompetent but who had better
connections or superior social skills. Jones eventually was commissioned by
Catherine the Great in the Russian navy to fight the Turks, but Jones rubbed his
superiors the wrong way--he had a knack for doing that--and that venture ended
badly.
He retreated to Paris, which was by this time
in the throes of revolution, only to find that doors once open to him were now
closed. Many of his former friends and supporters had fled or had been killed.
Jones tried to obtain another commission from
the U.S., but he was avoided and treated shamefully by the American minister.
Embittered and lonely, his health failed and he
died in 1792 at age 45.
The French National Assembly saved his remains
from a pauper's grave. They ordered that Jones's body be placed in a lead-lined
coffin in the belief that "more enlightened American governments (would) seek to
reclaim and properly honor their hero's remains."
Enlightenment did not occur until 1905. That
year the U.S. Ambassador to France was ordered to find his burial place, but it
took months to find it. His grave had been paved over and a laundry had been
built on the site.
There was a parade in Paris. Then the coffin of
John Paul Jones was brought back to America, where the President personally came
to witness the occasion, and the guns of many American ships fired belated
salutes.
His remains now rest in a tomb that would make
a king proud--at an institution he dreamed would one day exist, the U.S. Naval
Academy.
This carefully researched account of America's
tragic hero, written by an author who has a deep knowledge of sailing ships,
reads like a novel. His ability to describe sea battles and great storms at sea
is amazing.

TRAVEL NOTES FROM A ROAD WARRIOR
--Tip for readers: Create a folder for cities
and countries you plan to visit and clip out items on those places.
***MINNEAPOLIS Suburbs
--Kincaid's Fish, Chop & Steak House
Large restaurants are seldom great restaurants,
but Kincaid's breaks the rule. The service is attentive and confident. Diners
smile in this restaurant, which is something that I always look for in choosing
a place to eat. If they look grumpy, something's wrong. Kincaid's clam chowder
is brilliant, and their margaritas are excellent. I enjoyed a wonderful grouper
dish. Other notable choices: coconut-crusted prawns with Cajun marmalade,
rock-salt-crusted prime rib (Rock salt does improve the flavor.)8400 Normandale

--Chez Collette
If you can't get to France to savor escargot,
this brasserie in the heartland of America is an excellent second-choice.
Located in the Sofitel Minneapolis Hotel, its French provincial cooking is
superb. Simple refinement; immaculate presentations. 5601 78th Street;
Minneapolis, MN 55439-3105; phone 952-835-1900,
***PARIS, FRANCE
--BOFINGER (pron. Bow-faahn-zher)One of the
oldest and most beautiful of the city's brasseries. Usually crowded. The grilled
fish is excellent and the prix fixe meals are a good value in an expensive city.
5-7 Rue de la Bastille near Bastille Metro stop
--BRASSERIE DE I'LLE ST-LOUIS Located on a
charming little island in the Seine just a few steps from Notre Dame, it's
justly proud of its Alsatian cuisine such as onion tarts and cassoulet--a hearty
dish made of cabbage, cauliflower, unpeeled apples, white beans, shallots,
caraway seeds, in beef stock and/or dark beer. 55 Quai de Bourbon.
--BRASSERIE DES DEUX GARCONS A favorite place
of Cezanne and Picasso, and when you find it, you'll know why. You don't go
there for the food but for the atmosphere--the sidewalk tables outside or the
cozy desk-like little tables inside. Upstairs there's a piano bar. If I lived in
Paris, I'd go there often. 53 Cours Mirabeau.
--LE PROCOPE (pron. Proh-cope, after Francesco
Procopio, the Italian entrepreneur who founded it. Procopio was one of the first
to serve coffee in Paris--hence the name café.) The food is acceptable, but the
setting is what is impressive--old books and busts of the famous people who've
dined there, such as Jefferson and Adams and Franklin. When Franklin died, the
French National Assembly declared three days of mourning for the American whom
the French took to their hearts. Le Procope was covered entirely in black crepe
during the mourning period. Just behind the café turned restaurant is a charming
cobblestone street arcade where you can find the Cour de Rohan--a short lane
with three cloistered courtyards that was one of the sets for the film "Gigi."
13 rue de l'Ancienne Comédie, Latin Quarter
--PARIS RENTALS
I had a very pleasant experience staying in a
beautiful, privately-owned apartment on the Seine at Rue de Poissey. These
apartments can be leased--five-night minimum--for just a bit more than a good
hotel.

***FEEDBACK
--"The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library had an
overwhelming response to Gene Griessman's performance as Abraham Lincoln.
Because President Lincoln started the modern observance of Thanksgiving, we
thought it was a perfect fit to have Griessman perform the day after
Thanksgiving.
We originally scheduled only one performance,
but had to add a second performance because the crowd was so large.
We had a standing room only crowd for the first
performance and our theater was filled with a completely new audience for the
second performance.
Our audience ranged from young children to
senior citizens. Griessman had them laughing, learning and applauding. Several
visitors came up to me following each performance to thank the Carter
Presidential Library for having the performances. We are already discussing when
we can have 'President Lincoln' back again." --Tony Clark, Public Affairs,
Carter Presidential Library
--"I wanted to sincerely thank you for the
information I have acquired from reading your book 'Time Tactics of Very
Successful People.' I have been on a 'motivational kick' the last four months
and have just finished 29 books. This one is at the top of my list so far. I
deal everyday with the challenge of staying positive and motivating others. I
have applied many of the teachings from your book and have found exceptional
success. Not only has this helped me at work but also at home." Scott W. Savor,
Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, University of Detroit Mercy
--"Today I downloaded your 99 Ways Workbook and
Journal. I have made copies for my staff and hope they will implement your sage
advice into their daily lives. I have enjoyed your newsletter immensely since I
started receiving it more than 12 months ago. Reading it is a welcome respite
from my busy schedule." Richard M. Foote, District Manager, Davey Tree Expert
Company, Denver, Colorado
"I saw the video at a leadership training
conference this summer. I was selected to participate in the USDA Academic
Committee on Programs Internship program, which was held in Indianapolis in late
July. The 'Lincoln on Communication' was a video that they showed during
'personal training' time. I liked it so much that I wanted to buy it and use it
in my undergraduate interpersonal communication class." Ricky Telg, Ph.D., Dept.
of Ag Education & Communication, University of Florida
